FOUR boats took part in the first races of the season at Tenby Sailing Club on Saturday.

It was a beautiful sunny day with a good breeze, albeit a cool south-easterly, which enabled the Race Officer to run three competitive races.

Julian Cumpsty describes the scene: “Three Laser/ilca7s and one RS 600 launched as the tide retreated down the beach.

“The big south-easterly swell hit the racecourse as the wind died to nothing for the first race and the racers had to overcome the tide to make the first mark.”

Julian made the best of the tide in the first race and took the win.

Howard was unable to make the start due to the tide in the first race but undaunted showed good speed to catch the fleet by the end of the single lap.

Steve floundered in the light wind and big swell on the first beat of the first race but thereafter finished well ahead in the second two races in his RS 600.

Ben showed superior speed as the wind increased to beat the other two lasers.

Overall results on the day: 1, Ben Roberts; 2, Julian Cumpsty; 3, Steve Leach; 4, Howard Yeates.

The first Cruiser race is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 3rd.

A promising start was made to the junior training, with 15 registrations made on April 2nd, and more to come on Wednesday evening, April 9.

The newly trained instructors (pictured) make it possible to increase the numbers of trainees, and the effectiveness of training, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 16th and continues throughout the summer months until Wednesday, September 17th.

Another good quiz night was held last at the clubhouse on Saturday, April 5th, with proceeds going to the RNLI.
