THE Trubshaw Cup was held recentgly, with Saturday’s round hosted at Ashburnham and Sunday’s at Tenby.
At Ashburnham, competitors played for the Carmarthenshire Open, and at Tenby, for the prestigious Golden Eagle.
The overall winner across both days is awarded the Trubshaw Cup, a trophy originally presented by Mr Trubshaw when Ashburnham was known as Yeny Golf Club.
This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Golden Eagle, a striking statue first presented in 1985 by Mr R. Charlton of the Lifeboat Tavern.
What began as an open medal competition has since become part of the annual Carmarthenshire Cup weekend, with the hosting order alternating each year.
Ashburnham kicked things off this year, with players facing difficult conditions off the back tees.
Fortunately, the weather improved dramatically for Sunday’s play at Tenby.
A field of 46 players took part, with entrants travelling from as far afield as North Berwick in Scotland.
The field included both promising juniors and seasoned seniors, all single-figure handicappers.
Spectators were treated to some superb golf, cheering those who managed a 3 on Tenby’s challenging par-4 third, and finding comfort when the occasional duffed shot reminded them of their own game.
Players were only eligible to win one prize.
The best gross score in the morning went to Theo Baker of Celtic Manor, with Tom Peet of Pyle and Kenfig claiming the best gross in the afternoon.
In the overall standings, third place went to Bryn Thomas of Cardigan, second to Kieron Harman of Royal St David’s, and the winner, with outstanding gross rounds of 68 and 67 at Tenby, was Iestyn McAvoy of Glynhir, finishing six shots clear of the nearest competitor.
The presentation party included Tenby President David Blackmore, Club Captain Heather K. Morgan, and Ashburnham Captain Peter Hall.
All spoke highly of the standard of golf on display, the improved Sunday weather, and the warm welcome extended throughout the weekend.
Heather also gave a special thanks to Simon Sweet, Irene Gilman and Beth McMann for their excellent work behind the scenes on the scoring system, ensuring the results were produced swiftly and accurately.
