Plans by footballers from Tenby’s Greenhill School to take on the other home nations in Ireland later this year have received a boost from Tenby Town Council.
Ysgol Greenhill approached the Town Council over the possibility of some sponsorship/funding for the Year 9 football team, who would soon be travelling to Athlone in Ireland to represent Wales against the National Champions of the other home nations teams, after the Tenby team last year won the Welsh Schools cup, becoming national champions - a huge achievement for both the boys and the school!
“This is a huge opportunity for the boys, representing the school and Wales on the national stage,” wrote PE teacher Elliot Scotcher, in correspondence that came before the councillors at their meeting on Tuesday (February 7) night.
“The trip will be self-funded, but at this stage we are looking for any possible donations to help,” he continued.
Discussing the matter with fellow members, Cllr Charles Dale said: “I think we should help if we can, as they are local boys representing Tenby and Wales.”
“It’s very important that we celebrate the good they’re trying to embrace,” added the Mayor, Cllr Sam Skyrme-Blackhall.
With accommodation costing £2,800 for the trip, Cllr Duncan Whitehurst proposed donating £1,500 to the cause, with all councillors in agreement.
Following on, Tenby’s Mayor and Mayor Elect Cllr Dai Morgan visited the school this week to present the cheque and wish the team all the very best for a successful tournament.
