Penybont 0 Haverfordwest County

JD Cymru Premier Championship Conference

THE Bluebirds extended their unbeaten run in the JD Cymru Premier to six matches with a goal-less draw at Penybont on Saturday to remain third in the table.

In a very tight first half, County created the best chance when Kyle McCarthy’s deep delivery into the area was played on by Leigh Jenkins to Ben Fawcett who header rebounded off the post.

Ben Ahmun then tested home keeper Adam Przybek with an acrobatic effort as the Bluebirds applied more pressure.

Ahmun was denied again moments later when he burst clear of the Penybont defence to go one-on-one with Przybek but the keeper stood his ground and parried the shot away to safety.

Second placed Penybont, who are seven points clear of County, had their first real opening in the 35th minute when a loose ball fell nicely to Chris Venables but his low, driven shot was well dealt with by keeper Zac Jones.

The hosts came out with more intent in the second half and threatened to break the deadlock with a couple of early free kicks by Gabriel Kircough and Ben Morgan which were off target.

But the Bluebirds were defending well and looked to counter with 21-year-old Iori Humphreys powering through the Penybont ranks but his shot at the end lacked power and was turned behind by Pzrybek.

The visitors continued to shape up as the more dangerous side with Ahmun glancing a header over the bar following Jenkins’ cross and Greg Walters heading just wide after latching on to Abbruzzese’s free kick but Penybont held on to take a share of the spoils.

County boss Tony Pennock said: “I think we needed to win today if we were going to try and catch Penybont but they’re so far ahead of us in fairness to them. They’ve had a fantastic season.

“I thought on chances we probably edged it but we didn’t really test their keeper and Zac didn’t really get tested today.

“That’s three game and one goal in the three games between the two of us this season shows how close we are.

“On another day maybe we could have nicked it. But you always take a clean sheet at Penybont, or anywhere on the road really, so I’ll have to be pleased with that today.”
