HAVERFORDWEST County are building momentum in the JD Cymru Premier with three wins before their final game in Phase One, which is Saturday’s trip to Jenner Park to take on Barry Town United at the earlier time of 12.45pm.

Three wins on the bounce have now taken them to 39 points, still a way behind pacesetters The New Saints and Penybont but seven points ahead of Cardiff Met who are in fourth place.

Since losing 1-0 to Penybont back in early December, the Bluebirds won 2-0 at Newtown, beat Aberystwyth Town 1-0 on their return to the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium on New Year’s Day to secure a top six spot and handed Briton Ferry Llansawel a 5-1 hiding on Saturday.

Manager Tony Pennock said after their latest win: “I thought the boys were excellent. First half we started okay, just our quality wasn’t quite there in terms of attempts at goal, balls in the box and through balls.

“But then second half it all clicked really, and we just scored those four goals in the space of 15 minutes or so.

“It’s just testament to the lads and how good they can be when they concentrate and do things to the level that I know they can.”

He added: “I think today really showed the strength of our squad.

“I think it was what, five changes from the team that played on Wednesday, and the same team played on Boxing Day at Newtown and got us two good wind and two clean sheets.

“So it was important today that other people had the opportunity.

“The squad is strong at the moment and everybody needs to play their part, and the boys understand that.

“It’s not easy for me, but I’d rather have these decisions than the ones I’ve had in the past where I’m struggling, scraping around to find people to be on the bench on matchday because we’ve had so many injuries.

“Now we’re leaving two out from the squad every week, and it’ll be the same next week.

“The boys understand that. They come training with the right attitude, they work hard in training because everybody wants to play and then they just have to give me a problem to pick a team then.”

The Bluebirds’ 1-0 home win against Aberystwyth was enjoyed by 1,846 fans, the highest JD Cymru Premier crowd of the season to date.

Dan Hawkins’ goal late in the half was enough to earn the Bluebirds their 10th league win of the season, which confirmed their place in the top six for Phase Two for the first time since the JD Cymru Premier was restructured in 2010.

The Bluebirds were on top for the vast majority of the contest on their return to the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium having played all their home games this season at the LHP Stadium in Carmarthen whilst their new third generation (3G) pitch was under construction.

Haverforwest produced a scintillating second half display to run out 5-1 winners over Briton Ferry Llansawel after falling behind to a Tom Walters goal five minutes before half time.

Ben Ahmun equalised before the break and then, in the space of 12 second half minutes, the hosts ran riot to put the result beyond doubt with Rhys Abbruzzese, Owain Jones, Greg Walters and Ahmun again all on target.
