Roald Dahl was born in Cardiff 100 years ago, and this summer, Pembrokeshire has joined the centenary celebrations. Reading challenges in the county’s libraries have included family workshops where children could make twit’s beards and BFG ears to their hearts’ content.
This week, it is the turn of the Wales Millennium Centre, supported by Pembrokeshire Communities First, Treasure and Louis Okwedy, to take Roald Dahl’s characters off the page and into three dimensions.
Louis Okwedy has designed a magnificent metal roly poly bird as a centrepiece for the Weekend of the Unexpected in Cardiff. Families are working on the bird all week and the roly poly bird will come back to Pembroke Dock after its trip to the capital.
Treasure are delivering other ‘makes’ all week, including Esio Trot tortoises, a giraffe, giant peaches with insects inside and Fantastic Mr. Fox masks.
Christine Gwyther from Communities First told us: “August can be a challenge for families, particularly if the weather is a bit iffy, and we wanted to put on something everyone can enjoy. It’s been a busy and productive week so far.
We want to see as many families as possible this week and everyone is welcome to the free event in the hall of Pembroke Dock Community School, Bush Street, Pembroke Dock. The workshops tun until Friday, 11 am to 4 pm. Free fruit snacks and drinks are provided, with free coffee and tea for the grown ups!
“There is no need to book, but if you want further details please ring Communities First on 01646 681534.”
