A 'day which exceeded all expectations' was how a guided tour of the Castlemartin Army Range was voted by members of the local community.

The tour, led by National Park staff, was arranged at the request of the Castlemartin community council and organised in conjunction with council clerk, Shirley Machin.

The National Park's Castlemartin ranger Lynne Ferrand and field education officer David Matthews took the group by minibus and on foot to some of the range's historic farmsteads and wildlife locations.

Said Lynne: "We visited Flimston Farmstead and Chapel, Pricaston Farm and Brownslade before walking to Frainslake Mill and beach and Bluckspool. A circuit of the coast track taking in Linney Head and Pen-y-Holt Stack completed a six- hour visit which everyone enjoyed very much." A similar 'range day' has been offered to the Stackpole community and anyone interested should contact the Stackpole Community Council. And a walk around the Manorbier Range, looking at the geology, archaeology and conservation interests, has been organised for early August. Further details on this are available from Lynne Ferrand on 01646 624850.

• Two other groups - Pembrokeshire Historical Society and the Ridgeway History Group - were also able to visit the ranges for 'special interest' tours over the May Bank holiday weekend. Additional tours and walks for other local groups are already planned during 2006. Other interested parties can be accommodated in 2007 - but not before! The organisers are grateful to the Army authorities for their support and assistance.
