A stalwart of Tenby’s hospitality industry, Hubert Hilling can now say that he has worked alongside four generations of family at The Clarence Hotel, as he enters his 53rd year at the establishment.

On Monday, May 26, Hubert marked another anniversary, at the premises situated along the Esplanade which overlooks the seaside town’s South Beach and enjoys views out to Caldey Island - and he’s still going strong!

Now he is working alongside the 4th generation of Phillips family, with Steven and Martin now taking over ownership and the running of the hotel.

The always dapper Hubert is a firm favourite with many of the guests, especially when he goes out with them for their day trip, as his vast knowledge of the history and landscape of Pembrokeshire makes their trip fascinating.

He made the headlines some 20 years ago, when he made an appearance on BBC2 Wales’ 'Counties of Wales' television programme, speaking to presenter, Sara Edwards, all about living in a clom cottage, which is made of mud, which at the time had no electricity or water!

Some years later, in 2010, he made the news again, when he was given an early retirement present from Loz and Penny Phillips from the Clarence – a fridge as he had only recently had electricity installed in his historically original, 300-year-old clom cottage near Kilgetty.

As well as being filmed at the home, which has been in his family for 400 years, Hubert also showed the camera crew what his working day entailed at the hotel.

A spokesperson for the Clarence said: “Our fabulous Hubert has been working at the hotel for 53 years and can now say that he has worked for four generations of the Phillips family.

“He is big character and plays very important part in a day to day running of the hotel.”
