Crumbling concrete pillars held together with duct tape, countless missing tiles on the floor, and a leaky roof to let more water in - the poor state of Tenby Leisure Centre’s swimming pool has been highlighted once again - with a fresh call made to look at its longevity, over a year after it was suggested that it is nearing the end of its operational life.
County councillor for the wards of St Florence and St Mary Out Liberty [New Hedges] Cllr Rhys Jordan, has written to Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents' Services Cllr Rhys Sinnett, to ask for an update on the facility, after previously raising concerns about its poor and ‘close to failing’ condition.
A report on the swimming pool, from PCC’s Head of Cultural, Leisure, Tourism and Registration Services Mike Cavanagh previously stated that from a structural perspective, it was possible to extend the life of the pool by more than 10 years.
It was expected that a full feasibility study, giving an indication of the total cost of carrying out improvement works, which could extend the lifespan of the pool beyond 10 years, was to be commissioned, but that seemingly hasn’t progressed, much to Cllr Jordan’s frustration.

“It has now been over a year since the last meaningful discussion regarding the future of Tenby Swimming Pool, and quite frankly, I am losing patience,” stated Cllr Jordan.
“This facility is vital to our community, serving young learners, families, and older residents alike—not just as a place to swim, but as an essential health and wellbeing resource.
“We all recognise the financial constraints the council faces, but when it comes to facilities like this, we cannot afford to let them deteriorate to the point of no return.
“Every day that passes is another day closer to potential failure. We shouldn’t be waiting for a crisis before we act—yet that is exactly where we are heading.
“What frustrates me most is the lack of urgency. I understand that regeneration projects take time, but time is not on our side here. The county council seems to be burying its head in the sand, failing to provide clear answers or a tangible plan for ensuring the long-term viability of this pool.

“I made a pledge to my residents to fight for this pool, and I will not stand by while it continues to age into obsolescence due to inaction. The social value of this facility is immeasurable—it keeps our children water-safe, supports active lifestyles, and provides a space for rehabilitation and community engagement.”
Cllr Jordan has previously stated that his preference would be to build a new leisure centre at a different location, allowing for the current facility to be demolished and the site potentially repurposed for much-needed social housing.
“I will continue to push for answers and action, but my fear is that we will only see movement when it is too late. That would be a disgrace, and I will not shy away from holding those responsible to account,” he added.
