Welsh Liberal Democrats’ leader has visited an exciting community project in Kilgetty - one that seeks to help the growing concerns of social isolation amongst the male population.

Through a process of funding applications, the Rural Futures group in Kilgetty secured two cabins for community use.

Jane Dodds met with the Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for Mid and South Pembrokeshire Cllr Alistair Cameron (who is also County Councillor for the ward of Kilgetty and Begelly) as well as members of the Rural Futures’ My Square Mile Steering Group who are managing the project, along with local Liberal Democrat activists.

The project, which has received National Lottery funding, will involve the creation of two new buildings - a ‘Men’s Shed’ and a craft cabin for the local Kilgetty craft group.

‘Men’s Sheds’ originated in Australia in the early 2000s and were developed to tackle growing concerns of social isolation amongst the male population.

It provides a safe place for men to meet, chat and take advantage of trying their skills with some of the equipment/machinery available.

The other cabin will be used by the Kilgetty craft group providing additional space for small group work in addition to the larger groups working in the Community Centre.

The craft group does many projects using decoupage, sea glass and pebble pictures, knitting, sewing, paper projects and seasonal items.

They also get involved with community projects, such as knitting for charity and making items for hospitals. Craft Fayres are a regular event throughout the year.

Commenting, Jane Dodds said: “Welsh Liberal Democrats have always believed in strong local communities with vibrant and growing activities, and I appreciated seeing how these projects are progressing.

“I will be interested in seeing how both buildings will enable local residents to socialise and pursue their hobbies and interests,” she added.

Cllr Cameron remarked: “Kilgetty, Begelly and the surrounding areas have a strong community spirit with many local activities. These two buildings will greatly add to what is available locally.”

The Men’s Shed and Craft Cabin are located by the Kilgetty Begelly Community Centre Car Park, situated at Carmarthen Road, SA68 0YA.
