Kicking-off their home programme with newly-promoted Llanybydder as visitors to a resplendent Heywood Lane, Andrew Price-sponsored Tenby United started in fine style.

Captain Chris James cleanly caught the kick-off and linked with fellow second row partner Luke Dedman, who made good ground, before props Jonny Palmer and Rob Clark continued the move which ended with promising scrum half Jonathan Rogers being high tackled.

Undeterred by this incident, Tenby continued to pile the pressure on a stubborn Llanybydder defence which was eventually breached as number eight Sam Smith got into the act and barged his way through several would be tacklers to cross for the first score of the match.

With Rogers adding the extras and with only five minutes on the clock, Tenby had clearly made their intentions known that they would be playing an expansive game with a win and a try bonus point their objective.

From another Sam Smith charge, good interpassing and backing up led to Toby Smith getting on the score sheet, and again with Rogers adding the extras, Tenby were 14-0 in the lead with barely 10 minutes on the clock.

Llanybydder eventually troubled the scorers with a penalty by fullback Llyr Davies, and for the next 15 minutes, the game entered a quieter phase as the visitors improved their defence to keep the rampant home side at bay.

Referee Mills eventually pinged the Llanybydder flanker, who had lived offside for most of the match, and Rogers slotted the penalty to take Tenby into a commanding 17-3 lead, which was almost immediately changed to 17-6, as Davies was successful with his second penalty.

The game was drifting aimlessly towards half-time when the visitor's prop Dai Bryant was red carded for a stamp on Harry Bolton, who had legitimately forced his way through a ruck, a move however that was judged by referee Mills to warrant a yellow card for the Tenby flanker.

The second half started with Tenby remaining totally focussed on a win and try bonus, with halfbacks Rogers and Lloyd Thomas combining well to open up the visitors defence, and with the final long pass being well-taken by wing Simon Stanford, a third try was scored.

With Rogers adding the extras, a healthy 24-6 lead had been achieved with only a couple of minutes into the second half, the score became 24-9 with Davies adding his third penalty.

At the first scrum of the second half, it became evident that Llanybydder had no replacement prop on their bench and surprisingly the dreaded uncontested scrum rule was brought into play.

Tenby attacked straight from the restart and with Llanybydder on the back foot, replacement flanker Jason Ronowitz sneaked over wide out from a rolling maul on the visitors line to extend the lead to 29-9 and also clinch a valuable try bonus point.

Llanybydder tried to get back into the game and from a chip and chase centre Gary Evans was blocked by his opposite number Jack Guerreiro, who was dispatched from the field for the mandatory 10 minutes.

Llanybydder kept the pressure on the homeside and following another harsh penalty they managed to out-flank a stretched Tenby defence with winger Sion Walker scoring wide out to take the score to 29-14.

Down to 14 men aside, the game drifted into a stale mate with an improved Llanybydder defence keeping out a Tenby attack that strangely started to make too many basic errors and wrong attacking decisions.

Fortunately, this indifferent phase was quickly ended when Tenby got back into their usual smooth attacking rhythm with first replacement Sam Davies weaving his way over the line, to be quickly followed by wing Stanford who galloped over for his second try of the game.

With replacement Tom Lewis carrying on the excellent Tenby kicking performance and converting the two scores, the homeside had very quickly gone into a commanding and hard fought 43-14 lead.

The game ended with captain James being harshly yellow carded for questioning another bewildering decision by referee Mills who seemed to baffle both players and spectators alike throughout the game.

With the target of a win and a try bonus pouched, the coaching team will be pleased with the overall performance as the team continued their winning streak and will spend the week preparing for the challenging trip to Gorseinon tomorrow (Saturday).

With the homeside also unbeaten, and sitting along with Tenby on top of the division, coaches Gareth Thomas, Sion Brace and Ossie will no doubt get the team in shape to tackle this next hurdle in their quest for league victories and points.
