PEMBROKE’S First XV travelled to play Narberth Athletic for the first scheduled WRU League match, following the WRU’s decision to permit second teams to play in National Leagues.
Pembroke had made a few changes from last week, whilst the home side was as selected; it was dry, with the ground in very good condition.
The visitors started very strongly, moving the ball wide and No 10 Lewis Davies forcing his way over for a try after only a few minutes.
Within minutes the home side lost a player to a yellow card and the game seesawed between the two halves.
Pembroke’s scrum went very well at the set piece against a big home pack.
However, the home side’s speedy backs created a try at the start of the second quarter, which was rapidly followed by a forwards try from close in to give their side a 12-5 lead.
Soon after the home side were back on the attack and No 8 Phillips picked up off a scrum to barrel over to extend the lead.
Pembroke replied just before the break, when replacement Powell crashed over from close in after some very good handling to make it 19-10 at the break.
The home side started the second half positively, but the visitors kept them out, until a forwards’ drive from a lineout saw the home side score another try.
Pembroke responded and mounted multiple raids, but were held out, then midway through the half an excellent forward drive lead to a well-taken try for the visitors to reduce the home lead.
Pembroke kept up the pressure and the home side were forced to repel regular attacks, then in the last minutes the home side broke out of defence to score a well taken try that started deep in their own half, which cemented their deserved win by 29-17 and robbed the visitors of a bonus point.
The Panthers women’s squad travelled to unbeaten Morriston last Sunday in their WRU West Wales League match, following a win against Tondu Titans last weekend.
In a very competitive match, which saw both sides create and finish off some excellent moves, the visitors prevailed, winning a very entertaining and tough match by 10-19 to the delight of the whole squad and their supporters.
The young Youth squad were at home to Narberth last Saturday and had another tough assignment against a very mature Narberth outfit.
The game saw both sides produce some excellent phases of rugby, but the visitors came out on top by 5-50.
The junior age groups were out in action against Tenby with mixed fortunes, but the coaches reported that all age groups gave of their best.
A few of of the lads played for Pembs U11s County side last week, starting their own rugby journeys.
A large number of the club’s age group coaches, volunteers and club staff will undergo first aid training in the coming week.
The club is very grateful to WRU trainer Tim Poole for his input in providing this vital support to the club.
The club committee was delighted to hear last week that the Milford Haven Port Authority had awarded grant funding, which will be used for a new floodlighting project on the junior training and playing area.
The club is extremely grateful for their generous support.
The Ladies Committee is holding a Halloween Market at the clubhouse on Sunday, October 27th, between hours of 11am to 5pm.
Everyone is welcome to go along as there will be lots of stalls selling a wide range of gifts and other items, accompanied by the usual hospitality for visitors to enjoy.
There will also be a children’s fancy dress, Halloween Party on Wednesda,y October 30th between 5-7pm, with food, games and disco for a small charge per child.
Last Thursday the club’s weekly coffee morning welcomed the Pembs Health and Wellbeing Roadshow, when 15 different stations manned by health professionals provided opportunities for regulars and many others to access vital health checks and advice on a range of health issues.
The event proved a major success and was very well attended.
