Summer Series, Thursday June 20th
Dan Jackson reports: A beautiful evening afloat was shared by the four Redwing dinghies taking part in the summer series.
With a starboard triangular course set by race officer Dewi Jackson, and a downwind start there was a lot of gentlemanly jostling for the best position off the line.
R241 Jackson/Goldwait won the pin end and sailed the course whilst enjoying watching the battle behind as the fleet took each other upwind as they tried to pass each other.
Sense soon prevailed with R178 Cumpsty/Wood bearing off to also sail the shortest line to the mark.
A quick gybe and it was jibs out on the goosewing for a broad reach to the leeward mark.
At the end of Lap 1 R190 McDonald/Shaw were hot on the heals of R241 with R178 battling R228 Dowell / Prosser for the third spot.
On the final downwind legs R228 sailed the tides perfectly to ease in front of Cumpsty/Wood leaving it all to play for on the final beat to the finish.
R241 laid down a loose cover on the fleet with R190 opting to tack out of second place and head to the right side of the course, which had paid on the first lap, but alas with a shifty North westerly there was snakes and ladders on the upwind legs and the boats that went out to sea in the stronger outgoing tide benefited handsomely.
Results: 1, R241 D.Jackson / M.Goldwait; 2, R228 B.Dowell / P.Prosser; 3, R178 J.Cumpsty / R.Wood; 4, R190 A.McDonald / I.Shaw
