THE Blue Riband event of Pembrokeshire Cricket takes place at Cresselly Cricket Club on Saturday, 31 August, when Saundersfoot take on Lawrenny with a 12 noon start.

Lawrenny, who won the bowl in 2001, will be looking to make up for three recent final defeats, the most recent to Neyland last year, whilst this will be Saundersfoot’s first appearance in the final.

Here are your teams.

Saundersfoot

Yannic Parker (C), 33, operations manager: An ex-Welsh international rugby league player before injury, this is Yannic’s third year of captaincy. Powerful middle order batsman who is fantastic in the field with a great pair of hands.

Tom Mansbridge

Tom Mansbridge, 22, RNLI lifeguard: ‘Tommy mans’ who opens the batting is without doubt one of the top three batsman in the county this year as his back-to-back league hundreds and 75 off 34 balls in the Neyland QF can confirm. His left arm swing bowling and top fielding makes him a key all-round figure.

Danny Caine

Danny Caine, 38, Electrician: ‘DC’ has been an outstanding all-rounder for many years and is without doubt the quickest bowler in the county. As well as opening the bowling Danny does the same with the bat and is a key run getter in the side.

Sam Franklin

Sam Franklin, 28, youth worker: Another all rounder who seems forever in the runs and wickets and is also a key fielder. Sam, whose MOM performance in the QF against Neyland which included 76 off 54 balls and 4-34, will most definitely be hoping for a similar performance in the final.

Nick Cope

Nick Cope, 36, electrician: One of the mainstays of the Saundersfoot batting for over a decade and in that time has amassed seven centuries. He also plays an important role with the ball, as he did with his 4-13 haul in the semi-final against Llangwm. He is renowned for his big hitting but in that game he showed he knew how to read a game with 35 not out after his side had collapsed early on, batting with patience to see them home.

John Mansbridge

John Mansbridge, 23, apprentice ICA technician: Talented all-rounder who has every shot in his armoury with the bat and is a rhythm fast bowler who can win games with the ball and fantastic in the field. Outstanding with bat and ball at Carew in the semi final.

Gareth Edwards

Gareth Edwards, 40, managing director: A powerful batsman who can bat anywhere in the order as well as having a great pair of hands as shown in QF and SF with two important catches. Scored a match-winning unbeaten ton in the 2nds earlier on in the season.

Danny Brace

Danny Brace, 38, telecommunications engineer: The side’s wicket keeper who, after some competition for places early in the season, has cemented his place as no 1 with not only great work with gloves but also the bat. If he gets his chance and gets going in the final you can guarantee there’ll be plenty of catching practice for the crowd!

Simon Stanford

Simon Stanford, 34, process operator: The only left handed batsman in the side, ‘Stanno’ is another who could bat anywhere in the line up. Well known for managing to hit the ball in obscure places and scoring at a very good strike rate, he is the team’s main boundary fielder.

Scott Helmich

Scott Helmich, 34, tech sales: ‘Scotty’ who in his younger days represented Wales from under 12s right through to minor counties as a quick left arm seamer is also the only player in the side to play a final in doing so twice with Carew. Scott now plays as a middle order batsman with great stroke play and is one of the side’s top fielders.

Jimmy Caine

Jimmy Caine, 41, gas and plumbing engineer: A former captain of 10 years, he returned this year after a two-year hiatus building ‘Martletwy mansion’. He is a very clean hitter of the ball and it’s safe to say with a win on Saturday chairman Dickie Parcell will have a hard time balancing the books!

Iorri Richards

Iorri Richards, 18, Heatherton: ‘Yoz’ has made giant strides this year scoring his maiden 50 for the 2nds and also been impressive with the ball. He has played in every round and impressed with his fielding and is also looking to pick up his third piece of silverware this year after already lifting football and rugby trophies!

Neil Powling

Neil Powling, 45 (atleast), mechanical engineer: ‘Powser’ has plenty of wickets under his belt for the season with his clever disciplined bowling. Also, as it stands, he is yet to be dismissed with bat which in fairness he’s never mentioned once! Best square leg fielder in the county.

Lawrenny

Ryan Morton (C): In his first season as captain and is leading a young team with his typical mild and gentle approach to the game! He is a huge player for the team in all aspects and will look to lead from the front. Has a keen interest in ducks!

Troy Purslowe (VC): A class batsman and an absolute joy to watch. His fielding is also of the highest calibre. He is a typical Aussie and will be up for it all day! Someone who all our young guns look up to.

Harry Thomas: The most consistent batter for the last few years, and when he gets in hits it as far as anyone! He is also a more than useful slow medium bowler! His slip fielding is nothing more than a joy to watch.

Tom Cole: Another of Lawrenny’s experienced players. He is always loud in the field and someone the youngsters can go to for advice. He loves hitting sixes, is an outstanding slow bowler and one of the best fielders.

Joe Kidney: A hugely experienced player and someone you can rely on when the chips are down. He is constantly encouraging the young guns and is someone they all look up to. He has made massive progress this year as he now has lace-up trainers instead of Velcro!

Will Nicholas: ‘Windmill’ joined the club this season and has fitted in seamlessly. Has scored his fair share of runs and is the back-up keeper. He is a more than useful fielder when he can stay on his feet and will hopefully serve the club for many years.

Will Allen: One of the young brigades who loves getting in amongst it. He will probably be the loudest player on the field today as he is every week. Another who loves hitting sixes. Will runs the changing room music and together with Fin are the changing room jokers.

Finley Lewis: Another young gun, his bowling and fielding are as important to the team as him staying in on a Friday night. Thinks of himself as the better ‘Lewis’. Along with Will, he keeps up the tradition of changing room antics.

Oscar Lewis: ‘Oggy’ is the puppy of the team that is also the coolest of them all. It’s his first season in the firsts and he has been an unbelievable breath of fresh air that the team needed! Following his father’s footsteps, he is building himself to become another huge hit in Pembrokeshire cricket.

Rhys Eynon: The team’s spinner and premier boundary fielder, he loves nothing more than charging round the outfield every week. A more than capable batter. Also loves tractors and is fond of racing pigeons!

Rob Williams: Recently semi-retired due to becoming a professional festival goer/camper. When he does play, he still runs in like a teenager and throws himself about in the field. ‘Worm’ is one of the famous ‘Lawrenny dinosaurs’!

Noah Williams: A young fast bowler from the Williams clan!  He’s been playing at Lawrenny since he was a nipper.  He loves to pad up when he feels like it. Thinks of himself as the better Williams.

Alfie Buckle: A hard hitting batsman who can score very quickly. A specialist gully fielder who loves wearing a jumper. Adopts animals, would stop the game to check if the ferry’s arrived on time!
