As global leaders and business prepare for the upcoming COP 29th Summit with fresh urgency on the climate agenda, 24 young finalists from Wales will gather at an event in Pembrokeshire to make their bid to contribute to a greener, fairer, climate-smart world.
Cymbrogi Futures - a Wales-based education enterprise is hosting its second hackathon event on Friday, November 8, designed to nurture and skill up a new generation of ‘Tomorrow's Changemakers’ to help Wales’ transition to a net zero future. It will take place in Catalina House, Pembroke Port, in the heart of West Wales' energy and maritime transition.
“We’re putting young learners in the same room as business leaders and change-makers from all walks of life,” said Liza Lort-Phillips, founder of Cymbrogi Futures.
“We’re giving them some ‘wicked world problems’ to work on and they’ll be rewarded for their collective solutions. Let’s not forget - this is the generation that will face far greater challenges in a climate-changed world than any of us.
“If we can light the fire of their imaginations now, just imagine what they will be capable of in the future.”
Ian Chriswick, Director & Lead Educator of Cymbrogi, continued: “We’re hugely grateful to the companies that have supported this process so far - the Milford Haven Port Authority and Cwm Environmental in particular.”
The hackathon is the final stage of a flagship pilot programme designed by Cymbrogi called ‘Tomorrow’s Changemakers’ - inspired by Wales’ Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, the new Curriculum for Wales and the UN Global Goals.
It takes secondary school learners on a learning journey that starts online and that ends in an enterprise challenge rooted in their community in which they are invited to showcase what they’ve learned and present their ideas for how they’d solve a real-life ‘wicked problem.’
800 learners from four schools across Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire have journeyed the first two stages already, including Milford Haven School.
“The vast majority of pupils have found the project interesting and have really enjoyed the competitive element. The visit to MHPA was a real highlight for them,” said the school’s assistant head.
