Parking restrictions being introduced at Kilgetty’s Co-op store car park are being considered, but the matter could prove contentious according to a local councillor.
In a recent report to Kilgetty and Begelly Community Council, the ward’s County Councillor Alistair Cameron told members that the store was considering introducing parking restrictions which will mean vehicles parked for over a specified period will incur a fine.
If introduced, this will be enforced by an electronic number plate surveillance system.
“This possibility has caused significant concern for some residents who need to cross the car park in order to get to their homes,” said Cllr Cameron.
“If this scheme is introduced, the Co-op propose to have a white number plate system in which the number plates of residents, carers, relatives, and frequent visitors can be recorded so that they do not incur fines.
“For friends etc who are not on the ‘white records’ and who visit these properties, the Co-op manager has suggested that they give him the fine notice and he will destroy it.
“There are clearly practical concerns over the impact of this scheme if introduced, and I met the manager with a resident to discuss it.
“Some residents are very concerned over having to contact the manager every time a visitor not on the white list gets a fine notice.
“I am also concerned that as this will stop employees at other businesses in the village from using the car park, which will lead to more parking problems in Station Road and the surrounding area,” added Cllr Cameron, who said that he’d written to the County Council to make the Highways Department aware of these potential concerns.
