A Tenby triathlon competitor will be taking on two of the seaside town’s sporting events to raise funds for a Chemotherapy Day Unit in memory of a dear friend.

Twenty-eight-year-old Morgan Slate, will be taking on the Long Course Weekend and Ironman Wales events to raise funds for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Phillip Hospital.

Morgan is taking on the mammoth challenges in memory of his friend, Wayne Evans, who sadly passed away last year.

He passionately fundraised for the chemotherapy unit at Prince Philip Hospital as a thank you for the outstanding care he received, and completed the Wales 5k run at the Long Course Weekend Wales with a team of family and friends in July of last year.

Morgan said: “My good friend Wayne was sadly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2022 and lost his brave battle on 9th August 2023, leaving a huge hole in the lives of many throughout the community.

“Wayne was scheduled to race Ironman Wales in 2022 but unfortunately due to his diagnosis was unable to stand on the beach alongside us and cross the red carpet.

“In his honour and memory, I will be racing Ironman Wales in 2024 with the aim of completing the event for him. He will forever be an Ironman to those who know him, I want to take him across that magical red carpet which he deserved.”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “We want to send Morgan a huge good luck and thank you as he takes on Long Course Weekend and Ironman Wales in memory of Wayne.

“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
