Not one to argue with, Allen Watts was crowned King of Spades this week. Playing down the 10th, he found himself just short of the bunker where Chris Jenkins and his merry men were making alterations. Using all his expertise, he hit a firm ball - straight at a spade left by the workmen.

He assumed the ball was lost, but it flew high and landed on the edge of the semi-rough, allowing him to finish off the hole with a credible score. He was not the only one to fray the nerves of the ground staff. Roy Morgan had already caused mayhem when he hit his third shot on the 10th fairway.

Thud! His ball hammered into the sand just above the bunker with only an inch of white showing. Fortunately, the ground staff had moved well out of range - they had seen Royston play before. In fact, one of them even offered him the spade to dig his way out of trouble with his next shot. Unperturbed, he went on to score 23 points and remained six off the bottom.

Of course, Roy's highlight of the day was to out-drive Morgie, not once, but twice. Morgie did have the last laugh, however, on the 13th. Roy's second shot trickled into the left hand bunker. On the second attempt, he hit it out to the green at the back of the bunker and on his next shot lobbed it into the right hand bunker. No score!

Brian Morgan had a good first nine holes scoring 19 points and part of that score was a 'birdie' five on the second. A birdie five I hear you ask? It could have been a birdie three had he not hit a real birdie close to the green. Fortunately, the target bird seemed unaffected and squawked flew off in disgust.

Peter Williams, strode into the clubhouse firmly hanging on to his 'man bag' (well he is the honourable secretary of the Seniors group), and declared that he suffered from 'bunkeritis' on the back nine. As a result, his second half score diminished to 14, a disappointment after a commendable 18 on the front nine.

He should have followed Des Stone's example and only enter the bunkers labelled G.U.R. Morgie and Roy reckoned he had all the luck on this outing enabling him to reach the lofty position of 38 points.

This was not good enough to get near the prize money this week. There must be a genie on the course giving a helping hand. Throughout this winter season Seniors need at least 40 points to be in the reckoning. Martin Neilan has had a few this season, but his standard slipped this week, he only scored 38 points.

Jim Martin walked in pleased as punch explaining that he had had his best round in three years scoring 37 points. This was from a man who has a handicap of 25 and who topped the leader board for best net eclectic before Christmas. While not good enough to be in the top three this week he must have improved his eclectic chances.

Ken Gouldsbrough had a wry little smile on his face as he sat sipping his coffee. To anyone who would listen, he described his four-pointer on the par five 14th. His third shot had located his ball on the mound to the right of the green. Drawing back his club, he lofted his ball towards the pin and jumped (well, maybe it was a small hop) for joy as he watched it hit the green bounce once and roll into the hole for a birdie.

Young 'Bradders' (Paul Bradley) was disappointed with his 34 points, but nevertheless pleased with his back nine score of 24 points. Well who wouldn't be?

John Hayhoe, when asked, stated that the only excitement he had all day was the spectacle of watching Tony Ranoe strike the ball with great accuracy and consistency. John's 21 was the back marker until he was undercut by two points by a senior in the last group out this week. His score was just over half of that scored by Tony who, obviously, hit a rich vein of form.

A. J. Morris was hoping to lower his handicap, but a four putt on the 18th let him down rather, keeping his score at 35. Bob Howse was one above him on 36, while Paul Nixon joined Paul Bradley on 34.

Of the 38 Seniors who played over half (22) scored 30 or more and of those two were in the 40s.

There was a degree of mayhem in the clubhouse. First of all, Brian Morgan was up to his old tricks. He fumbled with his bag of balls and dropped half of them onto the floor. It is quite a sight watching all those Seniors on hands and knees making sure they are all retrieved.

There were also a number of Seniors scratching their heads wondering why the computer would not accept their score. It was because they had not entered and paid in the pro shop before tee-ing off. Read the notices gents or switch on your computers! We are all thrown off balance by change, but none more so than the Senior group.

However, everyone was delighted to see Rod Clark back in the fold after a trying period of ill health. Although he did not play, he was well cheered by the numerous greetings from all and sundry. Welcome back Rod.

Peter Williams won last week's bonus ball. This week there were four two's, three on the 17th and one on the 12th. Martin Neilan was the loner on the 12th, while Graham Jenkins, Tony Morris and Stan Hudson conquered the 17th.

Sharing the spoils this week were: 1. Allen Watts, 42 pts; 2. Tony Ranoe, 40; 3. Martin Neilan, 38.

Ladies' Section

Three years ago, a County Association involving Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire was formed primarily to promote greater participation for lower handicappers and particularly up-and-coming juniors in matches away from West Wales.

In 2010, the county team just lost against the much stronger counties of Monmouth and Glamorgan, but the junior girls and particularly Tenby members Emma Guerreiro and Georgia Thomas had a very successful year, as has already been reported, just missing being in the leading junior county team in Britain.

The Three Counties League, founded more than 40 years ago, has been absorbed into the County Association and while the handicap team had limited success, the Tenby Scratch Team - the equivalent of the Men's Super Six, won all their matches last year. We were delighted when the team of Heather Morgan (team captain), Emma Guerreiro, Georgia Thomas and Anita Davies were awarded the trophy by the association president, Ruth James, at the recent annual general meeting in Carmarthen.

Heather Morgan has now retired as the first treasurer of the association and has passed on funds in a very healthy state. We no longer have an officer on the association committee, however Ann Wilks is now the club's representative on the main committee and will be keeping us up to date with all county news.

Double celebrations for Rabbit Mark

With the previous weekend's action having fallen victim of torrential rain, the Rabbits section finally returned to their Winter League campaign last Sunday after the Christmas and New Year break.

But the lay-off seemed to have little effect on the form of leaders Mark Edwards and Juan Cruz, who maintained their 100 per cent record in convincing style, seeing off the challenge of Steve Watkins and sub Meurig Jones (in for Steve Cole) by the healthy margin of 6 and 5.

The victory keeps the pacesetters one point clear of their nearest rivals Chris Smith and Robin Bradbury, who also remain unbeaten after enjoying a 3 and 2 success in their match. And 'enjoying' is certainly the right word, as the win was a particularly satisfying one for Chris as it was against none other than his brother Kevin and partner Peter Turton.

Elsewhere, vice-captain Tim Davies and partner Richard Prout moved up to third place after a hard fought battle which saw them being taken all the way to the 18th by Paul Davies and Tony Hopkins, while John Hunt and Bob Flower came up roses with their first victory of the season, a 3 and 2 win against Chris Davies (replacing Tony Morris) and immediate past captain Mick Gillett.

Perhaps the 'match of the day', though, was the basement battle between Rees Davies and Mike Munro and Phil Carpenter and captain Mackie Harts (no doubt still celebrating his triumph over the Divots), which perhaps appropriately ended in an honourable half.

FOOTNOTE: As well as celebrating his success on the course, we can also reveal that Mark Edwards has also been celebrating off it these past few weeks after getting engaged to 'sweetheart' Lynne during a recent Caribbean cruise (must have been too much sun, eh Mark!). Sincerely, though, all in the Rabbits section wish you both the very best of luck and every happiness in the future... and don't forget, the Hawaiian shirts are still in mothballs awaiting any party!

Results: J. Hunt and B. Flower bt T. Morris and M. Gillet 3 and 2; M. Edwards and J. Cruz bt S. Watkins and S. Cole 6 and 5; C. Smith and R. Bradbury bt P. Turton and K. Smith 3 and 2; R. Davies and M. Munro halved with P. Carpenter and M. Harts; T. Davies and R. Prout bt P. Davies and T. Hopkins 2 up.

Subs: Chris Davies for Tony Morris; Meurig Jones for Steve Cole.
