Despite severe weather warnings, Saturday turned out to be a sunny day and even the several scattered showers failed to dampen the spirits and enjoyment of everyone taking part on South Pembrokeshire Coastal Run 2016.
Just over 100 motor vehicles, from the early days of motoring to head-turning examples from the 21st century, arrived at the stunning Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre between 10 am and 11 am ready for the start of the run at 11.30 am
There to greet them were the founders/organisers, Jeff and Sian Edwards, of Pembrokeshire County Motoring Events, along with the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Mayor of Pembroke Dock and the manager of the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre.
Also taking part on the event were Cubs and Senior Girl Guides to celebrate their 100th anniversary, which was organised by Clr. Peter Kraus, along with a coach which was kindly provided by Edwards Coaches.
With the sounding of Jeff’s starter’s whistle, Jeff and Sian led the grand parade in their well-known Rover 216 Cabriolet through the gates of the Heritage Centre, passing the Pembrokeshire, Welsh and Union flags proudly carried by the chairman of PCC, Mayor of PDTC and manager of the Heritage Centre.
The route of approximately 40 miles was via Pembroke Dock, Pembroke, Lamphey, Freshwater East, Stackpole, and after passing Merrion Camp, complete with its two historic tanks Romulus and Remus on guard outside the gates, continued to Castlemartin, Freshwater West (of Robin Hood and Harry Potter/Shell Cottage fame) and Angle, before making a stop at West Angle Bay - complete with its welcome café and toilets!
The run then recommenced, passing the Speculation Inn, Maidenwells and Pembroke, before returning to Pembroke Dock via High Street and Bethany Corner and finally the Heritage Centre, where the vehicles provided a static display in the stunning and beautiful grounds.
Everyone received a very warm welcome to the centre from manager Stuart Berry and his dedicated staff, and had a wonderful and very interesting time there - a truly very interesting venue!
Jeff and Sian wish to thank everyone who took part, along with Stuart Berry and his staff and Clr. Peter Kraus.
This event was an outstanding end to Jeff and Sian’s four Pembrokeshire County Motoring Events for 2016. They will recommence next year, with the first being the Western Telegraph South Pembrokeshire and Carmarthen Bay Run on Sunday, April 9. The South Pembrokeshire Coastal Run 2017 will take place on Saturday, October 7.
Happy motoring and a big thank you to everyone for your support during 2016. See you all again in 2017
Jeff and Sian Edwards
