A community litter pick is due to take place this Saturday (February 25) for Saundersfoot with those taking part asked to wear Welsh attire to mark the occasion.
The organised pick will be taking place on the same day as Wales’ Six Nations clash with England, which kicks off at 4.45 pm.
Anyone planning on taking part is asked to please meet at the Regency Hall just before 11 am for a quick brief on safety. Groups will be given certain areas of the village to concentrate on.
Once all the good work is done it’ll be back to the Regency Hall for 12.30 pm for a bowl of homemade cawl and a Welsh cake.
“Please come in Welsh Costume, a Welsh shirt or wear a Daffodil to get in the spirit before the big game later that day!” said Saundersfoot South county councillor Chris Williams.
‘The invite is open to all so please come along and help,” continued Cllr Williams who said that recently he had been invited to go out with Team Littlefoot, an organisation who cover some of the roads into the seaside village on a voluntary basis, picking up all sorts of rubbish from the road side and hedgerows.
“We are very lucky in Saundersfoot to have some extremely dedicated volunteers litter-picking in our village, beaches and lanes on a regular basis. I can’t name you all personally but the community of Saundersfoot would like to thank you all for keeping the village tidy all year round.
“Personally, I was shocked at the amount of rubbish we picked up. We cleaned the road from the junction at Pentlepoir down to the railway bridge, then down to St Issells Church.
“We then proceeded along Fan Road to the bend as traffic was picking up. Young Lewis Ludlow then cleaned the area behind the Doctor’s Surgery by the back steps to the junction by the arcade. We filled 11 sacks of rubbish and what was particularly disappointing was that around 90% of it could easily have been recycled rather than littered.
“Lewis is making a diary and noting everything he picks up which will be linked to Saundersfoot’s entry to ‘Wales in Bloom’. The litter was primarily beer cans, coke cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and McDonalds wrappers.
“We also had to remove full dog poo bags that had been tied up then discarded which was extremely frustrating. It’s tempting to blame visitors to the area, but when I drove on Fan Road this morning more takeaway boxes had appeared on the verges.
“The vast majority of local residents wouldn’t dream of littering. Please be vigilant and report any incidents as the cost to the council of removing the litter would be so much better spent on education and social services etc,” added Cllr Williams.
