PATER 58 (1 pt.)
ST. ISSELL'S 113 (13)
St. Issell's travelled to Pembroke Dock to play Pater in a mid-week fixture and returned home with 13 points in a 55-shot win.
One of the team had a personal problem on arrival and so the villagers played one short, but fortunately this had no effect on the overall performance.
For once, St. Issell's were fast out of the blocks and raced into a 30-shot lead after just five ends which was extended to 46 at the halfway point.
Although the second half was more even, the win was never in doubt, with top rink going to Terry Lamkin, making his debut at skip, with Don Pope third, Roy Kennion second and John Evans lead, winning by 33 shots.
Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Pater skips) only:
J. Evans, R. Kennion, D. Pope, T. Lamkin 40; J. Russell 7.
N. Griffiths, C. Roden, M. Carr, J. Moffat 29; J. Rapley 26.
J. Bingham, B. Glynn, K. Rowland, R. Pring 17; S. James 17.
M. Oliver, A. Brace S. Howe 27 (triple, score of 36 reduced by 25 per cent); B. Duncombe 8.
ST. ISSELL'S 106 (14 pts.) BORDERERS 57 (0)
St. Issell's entertained Borderers of Whitland last Saturday in a Pembrokeshire League division two fixture and gained revenge for an earlier season defeat away from home with a comprehensive victory by 49 shots.
Unfortunately, the visitors arrived three players short and were therefore penalised 25 per cent of their score on three rinks and the villagers took full advantage, securing all 14 points in their fifth league win of the season.
Together with the Pater result, 27 points from the maximum 28 was an excellent return and has lifted the team several places up the league table.
St. Issell's started slowly and without the statutory deductions were 11 shots down after five ends, but had fought back to lead by two at the tea break. The lads always seem to burst into life after a cuppa as yet again they dominated the second half and led by 20 after 15.
A final surge, together with the cushion of the Borderers' shots penalties, brought them home for their second big win in three days.
Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Borderers skips only):
B. McKehon, M. Carr, K. Rowlands, R. Pring 30; A. Reese 12.
J. Evans, J. Austin, T. Lamkin, B. Lee 27; D. Ford 16.
B. Glynn, M. Oliver, S. Howe, J. Moffat 34; T. Davies 18.
L. Allen, D. Pope, G. Cavell, B. Deeley 15; J. Addison 11.
COUNTY COMPETITIONS
Congratulations to the Saundersfoot members who have made it through to the county finals in Milford on July 17.
Teenagers Joe Dennis and Gemma Amos will contest the mixed pairs final, while Joe's dad, Myrddin, will accompany Graham Hughes in the four-wood pairs event.
The new competition of the over 60s rinks will see George Cavell, Allan Brace, Roy Pring and John Moffat hoping to be first to get their name on the new trophy.
Saundersfoot representation is also still high in the county ladies' tournaments, the finals of which take place in Haverfordwest on August 14 and 15.
SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 50
DARTFORD AND DISTRICT LADIES 41
The ladies of the club played host to the tourists from Dartford and District on Sunday afternoon in a three-rink friendly and won the game by nine shots.
Although starting in wet suits, after a stormy morning, the weather soon improved and most of the game was played in brilliant sunshine.
On rink two, Elsie Pendlebury, Steph Amos, daughter Gemma and skip Pam Smith soon found themselves five shots down, but as they say, bowls is a marathon and not a sprint and with the help of counts of five and six, the girls ended up winning by 24 shots to nine.
Rink three saw the only defeat when Angela Roberts, Joyce Howe, Elaine Shaw and Anne Davies went down by 18 shots to eight.
Lyn Statters, Pearl Thomas, Diane Disney and Audrey Williams on rink four were involved in a tight game, but with the scores level going into the last end, a count of four shots saw them win by 18 shots to 14.
After the match, all adjourned to the clubhouse where the ladies enjoyed a piece of birthday cake to celebrate Steph Amos's special day. Well done to husband John for surprising her and managing to cut 24 slices, even if he did cheat a little by having two cakes!
BIRTHDAY
On the subject of birthdays, Gemma Amos, this year's Saundersfoot Ladies captain, has just celebrated her 18th and best wishes are extended to her for the future.
St. Issell's Ladies 35
Whitland 35
St. Issell's Ladies drew with their Whitland counterparts on Saturday 35 shots apiece.
Lyn Statters, Brenda Davies, Audrey Williams and Beryl Lawrence beat Cally Jones's quartet 17-15, while Gwenda Rees, Sue Roden (capt.), Kath Blayney and Ceris Hewlings were just pipped at the post by Hannah Thomas and co 20-18.
Special mention must be made of young Katie Thomas, who led for big sister Hannah, and gave a good account of herself. Good luck to Hannah, too, for the forthcoming junior international series.

Ladies' day at Ascot
pic
Popular Saundersfoot Bowling Club members Ann Lewis and Gwenda Rees had a day off from their beloved bowls recently to enjoy the thrills and spills of one of the country's top sporting events.
Ann and Gwenda, along with Ann's daughters Joanna and Elaine, went to Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot.
Ann has always wanted to go to Ascot, but the event has always clashed with the Home International series.
On retirement from the Welsh team last year, Ann was keen for her Ascot dream became a reality and was over the moon to be able to go last month.
The four had an amazing time and certainly dressed to impress as this photograph shows. Pictured from left are Elaine Brace, Ann Lewis, Gwenda Rees and Joanna Balkwill.
