Steady rain for most of the day failed to dampen the spirits of the Ridgeway Local History Group who thoroughly enjoyed their annual outing to Aberystwyth last Thursday.
The beautiful countryside looked wonderfully green as we made our way to Aberaeron for a coffee stop. We had a free lunch break in Aberystwyth before meeting and making our way to the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments.
We enjoyed an interesting talk, dealing mostly with the fairly recent upsurge in interest in the military history of Pembrokeshire. We were shown some amazing archive photographs, including one of the Home Guard on roller skates! The thought of Capt. Mainwaring and his men using this mode of transport caused great amusement. Later we were given complete freedom to look at and handle a huge selection of material dealing with our area, which the staff had thoughtfully put out for us.
On our way home we stopped for a delicious meal at Nant-y-Ffin.
Several members were unable to be with us due to ill health and we would like them to know that they were missed and that we wish them a speedy and complete recovery.
Our thanks must go to our superb chairman, David Glenester, supported by his wife June, for all the work they do for us.
We have no meeting in August, but resume our indoor meetings at Skrinkle on Wednesday, September 2.
