Local county councillors are asking residents and businesses for their feedback on last month’s Long Course Weekend sporting event.
The triathlon which is held over three days from Friday (June 21) returned to south Pembrokeshire, with, as in previous years, the Local Authority stating it necessary to introduce a number of traffic restrictions on roads that the course takes in, to enable the event to take place in a safe environment.
There were rolling road closures in place once again in and around Tenby for both the sportive cycle ride and marathon on the Saturday and Sunday; and a temporary road closure along the Norton/Croft for the swim event on North Beach on Friday evening.
County councillor for St Mary Out Liberty (New Hedges) and St Florence, Cllr Rhys Jordan, has asked local residents for their feedback on the event, with his wards areas that were affected by road closures.
“As your elected representative, I value your input on the Long Course Weekend; which is crucial in helping us provide constructive feedback to officers and organisers to improve and steer future events,” he stated.
“Your feedback on road closures, traffic management, parking issues, community impact, and more will be invaluable.
“Thank you for your participation and for helping us make future events even better for our community!
“Please take 2 minutes to complete this short survey and share your thoughts on the event,” he asked, pointing people to the following link: https://forms.gle/kZUregzxmyF4kPXM9
Tenby’s county councillor for the North Ward has presented feedback to Pembrokeshire County Council on the 2024 event, raising a few issues, including a lack of public notification on Friday evening’s road restrictions, with no mention on the LCW or PCC websites carrying information; as well as maps/road closure times on the LCW website seemingly contradicting times that were displayed on temporary road signage around the area leading to confusion.
He also flagged-up a ‘dangerous’ and ‘chaotic’ mix of cars joining roads that cyclists and runners were using on Saturday and Sunday’s events.
Cllr Williams also expressed concerns that there are suggestions over moving the event into July and the peak summer season in the future.
“I'm told that in two years time it is suggested that the event is to take place in July,” he remarked.
“If this is correct it is unacceptable being peak season. Events I understood were to increase footfall in the shoulder season.”
