A discussion on whether the ‘resident parking permit’ scheme in Tenby should be for residents only, has seen local councillors call for a walkabout with Pembrokeshire County Council’s streetcare and parking manager.
Speaking at a recent meeting of Tenby Town Council, during a discussion on what objectives members would like to see prioritised for the next five years, Clr. Duncan Whitehurst welcomed the idea of a walkabout and felt that it could also help look at the parking situation in the seaside town, particularly resident parking areas.
He told his fellow members that he felt that resident permit holders who could not use their permits outside their properties should be allowed to park in PCC car parks nearby.
Clr. Paul Rapi agreed, saying that residents within Tenby were ‘fed up’ with not being able to park outside their homes even though they have a permit.
“Second home owners get permits for holiday makers and locals coming home from work are unable to park. Residents parking should be for residents only,” he stated.
Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane added that some areas weren’t eligible for the resident parking scheme yet all have paid their taxes. She felt a system was needed to accommodate these people too.
Clr. Charles Dale also suggested that assigned parking bays purchased in the multi-storey should be for the purchaser, not a designated car which would allow more flexibility.
Clr . Laurence Blackhall agreed that parking was a problem, but the question was how do the town council take these ideas forward.
“We can agree that this is what we as a council are going to try to do. If a solution cannot be found at least we’ve asked the question,” he remarked.
The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall said that she had already asked PCC’s streetcare and parking manager Marc Owen to visit Tenby to have walkabout with her to have a look at these issues and fellow councillors were welcome to join them when this was finalised.
