Carmarthenshire County Council has taken the decision to close its leisure facilities tomorrow, in light of the Red Weather Warning for Wind by the Met Office.

The Red Weather Warning is in place from 3am to 11am on Saturday, December 7, and it is expected that a period of extremely strong winds will develop as Storm Darragh moves across the Irish Sea. Gusts of 90 mph or more are possible over coasts and hills of west and south Wales.

“With the safety of the public first and foremost in our mind, Carmarthenshire County Council is advising the public to make only essential travel,” a spokesperson said.

The Local Authority has also taken the decision to close the following Council run sites to the public all day tomorrow:

  • - Household waste and recycling centres
  • - Museums
  • - Libraries & Archive
  • - Galleries
  • - Dylan Tomas Boat House
  • - Theatres
  • - Country Parks
  • - Leisure Centres
  • - Hwb Bach y Wlad
  • - Canolfan Eto
  • - All 100% Sir Gâr Christmas Pop Up Shops

All sites will remain open until normal closing time today, Friday 6 December as usual.

There will be no public transport tomorrow morning until 2pm.

The County Council is also placing additional crews and resources on standby over the weekend who will be ready to respond to changing conditions.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services - Cllr Edward Thomas said: “Red Weather Warnings are very rare and this is why we are taking the action to close our leisure and waste centres on Saturday.

“My message to our residents and visitors is to only travel if necessary and please stay safe.”

Please report emergency/major repairs by calling 0300 333 2222.

These calls will be taken by Delta Wellbeing during out of hours.

“We are expecting a high volume of emergency calls over the weekend. Please report minor repairs to us online,” said a spokesperson.

“Please remember this is for out-of-hours emergencies only, please continue to follow the Council’s usual process of reporting concerns during normal working hours.”
