Pupils from Tavernspite School have built an outdoor classroom with a difference - a 12-foot long igloo!

Every child in the school helped to build the structure under the watchful eye of outdoor play specialist Ben Ferguson-Walker.

He has set up Spiralife, a company that helps communities use outdoor space.

"I was at home in Meidrim with my children the day before because school was snowed off and we built an igloo on the common with help from local residents recruited via Facebook," he said.

"That gave me the idea to build one at school. It took us about four hours and every child put at least a handful of snow on the igloo.

"Once it was finished, they all came and sat in it with me in small groups while I explained to them about the insulation properties of snow and how the igloo stayed up.

"It was obviously a bit of a one-off thanks to the snow, but other projects I'm involved with include designing a BMX track for a local community."

Headteacher Kevin Phelps said: "The children got a fantastic sense of achievement from completing the igloo and it was a great teamwork exercise.

"I am sure they will have some special memories of the day they built an igloo at school."
