Labour MP for Mid and South Pembrokeshire Henry Tufnell says that he has held a productive meeting with the Chief Executive of of Hywel Dda University Health Board in an attempt to address Pembrokeshire’s healthcare crisis.
Following several months of campaigning to highlight urgent concerns regarding the state of healthcare in Pembrokeshire, Tufnell attended a private meeting with Hywel Dda Health Board’s CEO Phil Kloer at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest this month.
Last month, Tufnell presented evidence from his constituency-wide survey of over 1,000 residents to senior officials at Hywel Dda Health Board, outlining the stark realities of healthcare in the area.
He said that real stories showed the scale of the crisis, with examples of a cancer diagnosis delayed by over a year; and ambulance waiting times exceeding 13 hours for urgent cases.
Health board officials agreed to arrange a meeting with Mr. Kloer, which Tufnell had been trying to secure for several months.
Tufnell said: “I am pleased that this was a productive meeting, and the Chief Executive was able to acknowledge the scale of the challenges we are facing in Pembrokeshire and the need for radical transformation.
“Mr. Kloer has agreed that there must be a culture shift within management, and he has committed to continuing to meet with me while a coherent plan is developed to address the crisis.
“Healthcare is the number one priority for my constituents, and I am determined to achieve better healthcare outcomes in Pembrokeshire. I remain optimistic that this is a positive first step in that direction.”
To ensure ongoing transparency and accountability, Tufnell has submitted a Freedom of Information request to HDUHB, seeking critical data on current waiting times, service availability, and specific measures planned to address the systemic failings in Pembrokeshire’s healthcare services.
He is awaiting a response from the Health Board.
