An RAF Air Cadet squadron from West Wales has reached an exciting milestone after securing funding from Sport Wales to procure air rifles and establish a new firing range.

Cadets from 2420 (Whitland & District) Squadron, who come from Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire to learn exciting new skills, were celebrating the news this month.

This funding has enabled cadets to take part in air rifle shooting, with the squadron successfully hosting its first-ever air rifle range activity in January 2025.

The initiative has opened new doors for cadets, providing them with valuable marksmanship skills and the opportunity to compete in the prestigious BSA Silver Trophy postal competition this March.

By taking part, they will have the chance to earn the coveted gold shooting badge – an achievement not seen within their area for several years.

Flight Sergeant Rick Fisher, the Squadron’s Officer Commanding, said: “It has been fantastic to see the cadets engage with air rifle shooting. Access to a new range and equipment have given them a unique opportunity to develop their skills and work towards a significant milestone in the squadron’s history.”

With the squadron setting its sights on excellence, this initiative marks a new chapter for cadet training and future competition success.

To be an Air Cadet you must be 13-years-old, or 12-years-old if you're already in year 8 in school. The latest you can join is before your 17th birthday.

Most cadets leave when they're 20 years old and some stay involved as an adult volunteer.

There are over 1000 ATC squadrons at locations across the UK and overseas, providing exciting opportunities for over 40,000 young people and 10,000 adult volunteers.

There are local squadrons that meet in Tenby, Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest.
