It has been a difficult start to the short mat bowling season for New Hedges as more members are needed to play in matches. This year there have been deaths and various health problems within the membership which has meant a lack of bowlers to make up a team. Other clubs have similar problems and often matches have to be cancelled on the date arranged, so prolonging the match season. 'The Hedgehogs' are desperately in need of interested adults to join them on their Tuesday and Friday evenings. So, if you are reading this and would like to have a roll-up to see if this enjoyable pastime appeals to you, feel free to come along to the village hall (opposite the mini-market), just before seven o'clock on either evening. Bowls are available, but flat-soled shoes, or warm socks need to be worn. You will be most welcome!
The first match of the season was an away one with Hundleton on Thursday, September 26, when the New Hedges team suffered a loss, but hope returned with their second match which was on home ground with Llanteg on Tuesday, September 30, which they drew 5-5. Feeling more confident, they played away to Kilgetty on Thursday, October 16, and won handsomely 27-17.
Their next match was at home with Llanddewi Velfrey on Tuesday, October 21, and this they also won 34-21.
Then came the disappointment when only six players were available to play in the team away to St. Johns on Thursday, October 30, so the match was cancelled and should rereplayed on November 20.
Before that, however, there is a home match with Reynalton on Tuesday, November 11, and it is hoped that teams can be raised for both these November matches.
The same members played in all matches, namely: Arthur Pettifer (singles), Arthur Sims and Bill (doubles), Ann Pugh, Joan and Steve (triples), Shirley, Kate, Jane and Margaret (fours).
This year, there will be an extra early club luncheon on Friday, November 7, to be held at the Wiseman's Bridge Inn at 12.30.
