Tenby councillors have lambasted ‘lazy’ litterers who fail to take their rubbish with them and dispose of it in a proper manner.
A call for more bins to help keep Tenby’s beaches cleaner over the summer season was made at this month’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, with Cllr. Laura Crockford telling her fellow members that she felt that there were less bins on South Beach resulting in dog waste bags being put in recycling bins.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Charle Dale felt this was just as bad as people hanging dog waste bags on trees or fences!
“You have taken the time to pick up the waste, take it to an appropriate bin,” he commented.
Cllr Laurence Blackhall remarked: “If a bin has been in a certain place for years and then it is removed, people still put their rubbish where the bin was situated!
“If you cannot find an appropriate bin, take it with you until you do or take your rubbish home. Do not just dump it in the car park etc. It is difficult to manage stupidity.
“The stuff that could be recycled goes on the litter lorry then into landfill. Every ton sent to landfill is more money on our Council Tax. If people were not so lazy it would save everyone money.”
Cllr Dale felt that Pembrokeshire Council’s logic to take away public bins, that had a history of being abused, didn’t help matters, stating: “While I agree, we need to make it easier for them - the answer is not to take bins away because when we had more bins, we had less of this.
“However, it also not the right thing that Airbnb and some other holiday let people are still being told to put their rubbish in, or next to, the street bins.”
County councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams has been conducting his own clampdown on such matters, with help from the Local Authority.
“The number of properties and second home owners now signed up to trade waste agreements has vastly increased, and vastly reduced the waste into our public bins,” he stated.
“Last year it was extremely disruptive and Saundersfoot had the bins replaced by PCC to help limit the abuse of full black bags.
“This has been working very well and the local residents should also be applauded as they have also been really supportive in pointing out abuse and challenging this.”
