It was a beautiful morning on June 20 when members of the Haverfordwest Branch of Dyfed Family History Society visited the Carew Cheriton Control Tower, writes Cate Hobbs.

The volunteers of the Control Tower made us all very welcome and gave us an insight into the many artefacts they hold and the conservation work they are trying to do to preserve these things for future generations.

We were then treated to tea, coffee and biscuits by the ladies of the Control Tower and all enjoyed looking around the museum.

We were then privileged to lay a poppy cross at the monument for all the brave servicemen and women who contributed to the defence of Pembrokeshire in both World Wars, many of whom lost their lives in the conflict, and we held a minute’s silence in their memory.

Our next port of call was the hanger where they are currently restoring an Avro Anson aircraft and have restored other vehicles from WW2.

Unfortunately, they do not have the room that they need to do all that they would like to, and don’t have the funds to expand.

Finally, we were taken to the Control Tower itself and were introduced by several volunteers to the work that was done in the Tower and how they had brought it back from being a cowshed for many years.

Some brave members of our group dressed up in costumes of the day, which proved highly entertaining.

Our visit ended with a sing song in one of the shelters, which rounded off an enjoyable and informative visit, we would recommend a visit to this museum to anyone, young or old.
