On Sunday, the cricketers from Carew and St. Ishmaels will compete again in the Harrison-Allen Bowl final, after a delay of two weeks, but what is the longest time span between the date of the original final and the replay? Narberth Cricket Club's former player, administrator and current scorer Idwal Vincent has been doing some research generally about Narberth cricket and has provided details of the 1950 final between Narberth and Burton United, which could provide the answer to the question. The match was played at Cresselly on August 26, 1950. Narberth batted first and scored 94 for 9. Elwyn Evans 23 not out, Ivor Badham 22 and J. R. Thomas 11 were the main scorers. For Burton, Howard Goodridge took 4 for 55 and Ernie Hoyland 5 for 27. In reply, Burton reached 82 for 7. The main run- getters were P. Esmond with 24, with D. Jones and Len Barrah both scoring 16. Lloyd George took 6 for 29 for Narberth and Peter Davies had 1 for 22. For whatever reason, the replay was held up until the following year and was played on May 19, 1951, in a match which Burton won by six wickets. Narberth scored 112 for 6 in their first innings. The main contributors were Ivor Badham 40 not out, Harry Tucker 15, Elwyn Evans 13 and Owain Howell 11. Ernie Hoyland and Howard Goodridge were the principal wicket-takers once again, as Ernie Hoyland took 3 for 47 and Howard Goodridge 3 for 35. Burton United were bowled out for 106 in reply, with Jack Scale scoring 30, Ernie Hoyland 24 and Duggie Morris 15. For Narberth, Lloyd George did the damage with 6 for 39 and J. R. Thomas took 2 for 36 In the second innings, Narberth totalled 124 for 8, with most of the runs coming from Michael Powell with 36, backed up by Elwyn Evans 25 and Ivor Badham 14. Ernie Hoyland took 5 for 51 and Jack Scale 2 for 45 Burton United won the final upon reaching 132 for 4. Jack Scale had a match-winning innings of 57 not out; Ernie Hoyland scored 27, Duggie Morris 15, Roley Morris 15 not out and Len Barrah 10. J. R. Thomas was the pick of the Narberth bowlers with a return of 4 for 64. Looking back at the players in both teams, Idwal Vincent said: "Three of the Narberth team are still alive - Lloyd George and Owain Howell both live in Clunderwen and Michael Powell in Miskin, near Cardiff. "Jack Scale is the only survivor that I know from the Burton team and still attends the home matches and his son John plays for Burton at present."
