Archivist at Caldey Abbey, Brother Luca, told us that at the moment he is reading up on the war years, and how a devastating fire damaged a large part of the monastery and completely gutted the church on the island near Tenby.
Many men were employed in rebuilding the church during the years 1950 and 51, and Br Luca wonders how many were local people. “I already know of two, but would love to know more,” he added.
On the back of the left-hand photograph of the two men is written their surnames, Davies and Griffith - Welsh names, but were they local? No surname is given for the third worker pictured.
In response to this story, which was printed in last Friday’s edition of the Observer, Mrs Christine Graham (née Marsh) has told us she believes that the third man might picture have been her father. Albert Granville Marsh was a mason on Caldey Island for 17 years during the 1950s. He was featured in photographs published in local author Roscoe Howell’s book on the island, ‘Total Community’.
Do you have any further suggestions as to the workers’ identity?
