Works to connect parts of Saundersfoot in a safer manner for pedestrians and cyclists under the 'active travel' project are set to continue.
Funded by Welsh Government following a successful application by Pembrokeshire County Council, the schemes are designed to make it easier for people in the community to use active travel in their day-to-day lives.
The work got underway last year around the Fan Road area and looks set to continue in the near future.
A programme of works connecting Saundersfoot Railway station to other parts of the village as part of an initial phase of the scheme are now complete. However project workers will be returning to install chicanes to ensure that users reduce speeds at strategic locations along the route.
Sadly a section of the installed traffic calming measures were vandalised recently, county councillor Chris Williams has reported, with the bolted features having been forced from the carriageway surface, which will now need replacing.
“The landscaping along the verges has started to establish and the wildflowers are a welcomed improvement,” said Cllr Williams.
Part of the route between the end of Brooklands Place and the trafficked section of The Incline (near Railway Inn Cottage) has been closed to public recently to enable the contractors to complete the MUR upgrade which includes drainage improvements, kerbing new 2.8m wide active travel pedestrian and cycle facility, and initial bitmac surface.
This will have a final surface of tar n chip nature and be a buff coloured path to ensure it is in keeping with the rural location.
“Following the completion of the initial phase we will be closing the section between Railway Inn Cottage and the junction of Westfield Court, this section will be renewed in a permeable bitmac surface with new drainage and kerbing,” continued Cllr Williams.
“The works will then focus on alterations to the frontage of Westfield Court and the MUR uncontrolled crossing.”
Further works from Westfield Cottage westwards along The Incline are to be programmed following engagement with CADW and Pembrokeshire County Council officers; plus works to Brooklands Place.
Additional design works are advancing for Milford Road, the Harbour mini roundabout, Cambrian Place, Stammers Road and Sandy Hill Road; along with a review of the Coppet Hall to the Primary School route.
With further Active Travel project works within the village being considered, Cllr Williams said that engineers are looking to advance several scheme proposals for a public engagement.
