Police have confirmed that sadly one person has died following the road traffic collision that occurred near the Cleddau Bridge this afternoon, following a collision between a 52-seater coach and car.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police stated this evening shortly after 7 pm: “Sadly, one person has died. Next of kin have been advised and are being supported by officers.
“The collision involved a car and a coach. One person was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
“A number of passengers on the coach were taken to hospital with various levels of injuries.
“The A477 is currently closed between the Honeyborough roundabout and the Pembroke roundabout and road users are advised to take an alternative route,” they added.
A ‘major incident’ was declared by the fire service following the RTC which occurred on the A477 near the Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock at about 2.15 pm today (Tuesday, September 5).
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today, Tuesday, September 5, at approximately 2.14 pm, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A477.
“We sent five emergency ambulances, one duty operations manager, one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit and non-emergency patient transport service vehicles to the scene. We were supported by colleagues from the Wales Air Ambulance.”
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said at the time of the collision that one driver was ‘severely trapped’ with crews working to extract the trapped driver as well as administering first aid. Many of the bus passengers were suffering with various injuries.
A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 2.19 pm on Tuesday, September 5th, the Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Tenby and Narberth crews were called to an incident on the Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock.
“Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving one 52-seater bus and one private motor vehicle.
One eye-witness stated: “It's directly outside our driveway. This is for sure the worst traffic accident I've ever seen.”
Senedd Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire Sam Kurtz stated: “Our worst fears have come true. Incredibly sad to learn that an individual has died following today’s accident on the Cleddau Bridge.
“We will await to hear more information as and when it comes, but now, my thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s family, friends and loved ones.
“The grief they must be going through is incomprehensible.”
