A familiar face and voice to many athletes that will have crossed the Ironman Wales finishing line in Tenby has sadly passed away.

Ironman organisers have shared the ‘devastating’ news that Jay Luke has died.

They shared: “It breaks our hearts to share the devastating news that a dear member of our Ironman UK family has passed away.

“Jay Luke, who has called thousands of athletes across the line during their Ironman journey over the past nine years, was part of the fabric of our team.

“His presence, humour, and unwavering support were felt by everyone lucky enough to know him.

“From the jokes, laughs, coffee missions and unmatched travelling cap collection to his infectious energy on the finish line, his absence leaves a huge hole in our hearts.

“We will carry his spirit in all we do. We are heartbroken, and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife, family, friends, and all who loved him.

“Rest in peace, Jay — it won't be the same without you,” they added.

One of those that will have shared duties many times in welcoming competitors along The Esplanade final stretch for the sporting spectacular in Tenby, announcer Paul Kaye, also paid tribute: “Victory Alley wont quite be the same again. Triahtlon is a niche sport, and within that niche is a small family of announcers and DJs.

The Ironman Wales community is saddened by the passing of announcer Jay Luke, who was a cherished presence at the Tenby finish line, celebrated for his humour and support.

“This family lost one of its own. Go strong Jay, enjoy your cappuccino with Papa Luke.

“It's tragic, devastating news. But even more so for Mackerz. Sending you so much love and strength during this extremely difficult time,” he added.

Tenby’s Matt Broadhurst who has both taken on the triathlon and also worked for Ironman, said: “RIP big man - the triathlon community has lost one of the best.”

Tenby hosts Ironman Wales once again on Sunday, September 21.
