Tenby Sharks Amateur Boxing Club is gearing up for another round of bouts next month at the seaside town’s Leisure Centre - and making a little bit of history along the way, with three ‘Sharkettes’ representing the Club at a show for the first time, something that the head coach says he’s ‘super proud’ of.

February 11 saw boxing bouts beside the seaside return, as the Tenby Sharks put on a show to remember at the venue on Marsh Road, in what was only the second show of boxing since the Club’s inception, and the first show held in Tenby for several years.

The Sharks (now based at their gym at Carew Airfield) set about showcasing all the hard work that's gone on since it opened its doors in 2017 - and are now looking forward to the next show on the evening of Friday, June 2

“It's going to be the first time stepping through the ropes for many of those competing at this show, and it’s been great to see so many turning up and getting involved in our sessions these days,” said Sharks head coach Mark Davies.

“The youth of today are constantly getting flack. If its not for being sat in front of a screen of some kind, then it's for running around the streets causing mischief - so to have 20 to 30 kids come through our sessions using their time to improve their health and fitness, building bonds whilst learning respect an discipline is what it's all about.

“Also, I really want to highlight the fact we will have three females boxing for us on this show - the first time we've had any of the girls out for our Club, something we are super proud of,” he continued.

This month, one of the Shark’s promising prospects Frankie Gammer (whose father Scott was a former professional boxer) put up a good showing at the Welsh School Boy Championships, in his quest to be crowned Welsh Champion of 2023, narrowly losing on points to last year’s winner in the semi-final.

“Sadly it wasn't to be for Frankie today as he lost on points to last years Welsh champion - but as disappointed as Frankie is, we as coaches and as a Club couldn't be any prouder of the way he has represented not only himself but Tenby Sharks Boxing Club on the weekend,” said Mark.

“In the quarter final, Frankie went in against a far more experienced lad in Tyler Gibbs from Cwmbran ABC but boxed absolutely brilliantly to capture a unanimous win and a ticket in to the semi-finals.

“This was only Frankie’s fifth bout after a whirlwind first season that only started in February.

“Sometimes the lessons learnt through disappointment are the most valuable on the road to success..

“Frankie will be a Welsh Champion - it’s just a matter of when!” he continued.

Tickets are still available for the Sharks’ final show of the season on Friday, June 2, at Tenby Leisure Centre.

The Club has decided to do things a little different this time to make things more affordable for everyone without having to compromise on the standard of show it always strives to put on.

Seats for Under 16s are £15; Adults - £20; and £35 for Ringside seats (+£5 on all tickets on the door. Walk-ins on the night will be limited to however many spaces are left after ticket sales).

Sloppy Joes Streetfood Hq will be there once again serving up food for those that want it (It won't be provided with your ticket this time though). A fully licensed bar will also be available at the venue.

“With 12 Tenby Sharks looking to compete, potentially three of whom are Sharkettes representing the Club’s female members, we are looking forward to showcasing all the hard work we put in week in week out,” explained Mark.

Please, don't forget to get down and support us, as without any support the amateur boxing scene will die out, and then where will that leave the pro game.
