Lampeter 22 pts. Tenby United 21

After a string of excellent results which has seen them climb the Division Three West table, Tenby United travelled to Lampeter in confident mood on Saturday.

Surely they would book their place in the second round of the Swalec Plate competition without too many problems being caused them by the Carmarthenshire outfit.

After all, only three weeks earlier, the free-scoring United had piled more than a half-century of points on their opponents at Heywood Lane, without a single reply.

And what's more, Lampeter are currently struggling desperately in the league as they prop up the table with only one win in their eight outings so far this season.

Surely, the high-flying Seasiders would again show their class in the sunny conditions and put the opposition to the sword for the second time in less than a month.

Wrong! Lampeter had obviously not read the script as they were clearly determined to make a fist of it this time.

And they certainly did that in more ways than one! They took the game to the United in the early stages and rocked them back on their heels with some impressive play.

It brought them two tries through scrum-half Carwyn Lewis and flanker Geraint Thomas and, with one of them being converted by Huw Thomas, it gave them a surprise 12-3 interval lead.

Tenby's only reply was from the boot of Lloyd Thomas, who banged over a penalty.

And it was not long after the break that the home side stretched their advantage with another three points thanks to a penalty from Lyn Jones.

At last Tenby seemed to wake up. They showed their fighting spirit as they hit back with two tries themselves, from prop Lyndon Jones and speedy winger Simon Stanford, one of which was converted by Lloyd Thomas to level the scores.

The United now had their tails up and when Thomas landed a penalty together with another from outside-half Toby Smith, victory looked to be within their grasp as they held a six-point lead.

But Lampeter had other ideas. Spurred on by the home support, they mounted one last effort and were rewarded when hooker Aled Jones crashed over for a try.

It still meant that the conversion had to go over, though, and, despite the difficult angle, fly-half Thomas kept his nerve to split the uprights to send Lampeter through to the next round... and the United back home licking their wounds after a shock exit from the competition.
