If you want to see a high standard of local rugby rather than the dour stuff often churned out on obscure pre paid sports channels look no further than the Lewis Lloyd Ground which saw Narberth RFC play its first match of the new season on the weekend, taking on Trebanos.
The large crowd who turned out to watch the Otters were treated to some scintillating rugby with eleven tries scored in all.
With a new coaching team and some new young talented players, the Otters faithful supporters were unsure of what might unfold but they had nothing to worry about as the team put in an excellent performance against a very good Trebanos side with some very quick backs who tested and stretched the Otters defence throughout the match.
With some brilliant support play scoring was free flowing throughout the match. Narberth showed that they can work the ball into the right areas with some impressive handling from forwards Tom Slater, Roy Osborn and Will Blackburn.
Lewys Gibby, at scrum half, showed his speed and agility to notch up a hat-trick of tries and winger Dean James showed his power and strength up the touchline on a number of occasions which resulted in him crossing the try line on two occasions.
Captain and flanker Tom Powell showed a tremendous work ethic throughout the match and was also rewarded for his industry with two tries. Centre Ilan Phillips showed his class on numerous occasions and with great footwork was rewarded with a try and the final try went deservedly to No.6 Josh Hamer who tackled hard and worked tirelessly throughout.
Two Narberth tries were scored from attacking moves which started near their own try line which brought rapturous applause from the home crowd.
The Otters’ final try count was nine with five converted by Jonathan Rogers and two by Ianto Griffiths.
In all fairness Trebanos played their part in this exciting match and never gave up during the match scoring two tries of their own and two penalties.
The final score finished Narberth 59 Trebanos 18.
