Boxing Day saw the annual return of the Exiles to play against a Pembroke Club XV.
In very wet, heavy conditions the teams served up some excellent entertainment for the large festive crowd, who thoroughly enjoyed the match, which was eventually won by the Club XV.
The Gibby Family have sponsored this match for many years now and the teams play for the Jenny Gibby Cup; Pembroke skipper Lloyd Davies is seen receiving the Cup on behalf of his squad in front of all the players, from “J”, Richard and Lewys Gibby. Everyone retired to the club for a few very enjoyable hours to share memories of past matches and well earned refreshments.
The First Xv match versus top of the table Cardigan scheduled for December 30 was sadly cancelled shortly before the scheduled kick off time.
After days of rain the pitch was extremely wet and heavy; the referee Dave Byrne, who was more than willing to give the two captains the option to play, Pembroke’s squad were keen, but the visiting skipper declined and so the match will be replayed later in the New Year.
Meanwhile, the Youth entertained Crymych on the reserve pitch, again in heavy conditions, which posed issues for both teams, but they served up some excellent rugby given these conditions.
Pembroke dominated most phases of the game, territory and possession for the majority of the match. Despite a slippery ball, the both sides tried hard to play expansive rugby.
Pembroke’s excellent close support work proved a decisive factor and they scored freely, despite stubborn resistance from the Crymych lads and they scored some very well constructed tries to win the match convincingly in front of the large, vociferous and resilient crowd, who braved the constant heavy rain.
Congratulations to Lewis Dennison and Bowyn Clarke on being chosen for their respective Scarlets squads, Bowyn is scheduled to be in the squad to play Cardiff at the Arms Park later this week. Everyone wishes them every success as they start their rugby journey at representative level.
Congratulations to the following winners of the December 150+ monthly Draw, £100 John Merriman, £75 Mark Davies and £50 Anthony Watkins. The bigger January prizes will be drawn in the weeks ahead.
There are still places available to join, anyone interested should see Mary James.
Revellers enjoyed a hugely successful New Year’s Eve party at the club, where The Two Robbies provided excellent entertainment throughout the evening.
