Llanybydder 22 pts. Whitland 33
Whitland kept up the pressure on division two west league leaders Yr Hendy with another fine victory away at Llanybydder on Saturday.
As a result, the Borderers stay in second place in the table, seven points behind the pacesetters, who also won again, but the Green and Whites have the advantage of two games in hand.
They have now won 10 of their 11 games, accumulating 45 points in the process, while in contrast, Llanybydder are struggling at the bottom, where they propping up the rest with only two victories under their belts.
Having beaten their opponents by over 90 points in the reverse fixture earlier in the season,Whitland could have been forgiven if they thought they might be in for another easy ride last weekend.
But they would have been wrong as, although they held the upper hand for most of the time, Llanybydder put in a much improved performance and battled gamely throughout to finish within 11 points of their visitors.
And that was very much to their credit as, with the elements in their favour after the break, they ‘won’ the second half 15-8, having trailed by 25 points to seven at the break.
Whitland’s points in the first half came through tries by wing men Scott Candler and Liam Price and centre Ryan Davies, with fly-half Nico Setaro adding two conversions and a couple of penalty goals for good measure.
Llanybydder replied with a try by Richard Davies, converted by Steffan Richards.
Richards himself got in on the try-scoring act after the interval, as did Dafydd Aled Evans, one of the touchdowns being converted, with a penalty goal also helping to close the gap on the Borderers.
But that was as close as they got, as Whitland stretched away again in the latter stages thanks to a try from number eight Jack Mason and a third penalty goal from the boot of Nico Setaro.
