A welcome home party was due to be held yesterday for Pembroke Dock boxer Mickey Mcdonagh who won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games last week.

The nineteen-year-old who who splits his training between Merlins Bridge ABC and Cardiff, lost a split decision to Australian Harry Garside in the men’s boxing 60KG semi-final at the Oxenford Studios last Friday.

Mickey had previously outclassed Qhobosheane Mohlerepe of Lesotho in round one of the games to take a unanimous 5-0 verdict, before seeing off Papua New Guinea’s Thadius Katua by the same scoreline.

“We are extremely proud of what Mickey has done, to get to the Commonwealth Games and to compete against world level opponents is an achievement in itself, and coming home with a bronze medal at 19 just says it all,” said Mickey’s sister Stacey Mcdonagh.

“As a family we want to thank everyone for the support. It has been really touching seeing so many people get behind him,” she continued, adding that her brother was now focused on making the Team GB squad for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and would welcome any sponsorship to help towards his quest for Olympic gold.
