WELSH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
A fixture overlapping with the longest day and midsummer would be expected to be played in reasonable weather. However, this year is different and the Welsh Team Championship at Cardigan had low temperatures, fog, high winds and rain and that was just the first day!
On Saturday morning, they played Whitchurch and again won 3-2 as they did in their match against Carmarthen in the afternoon.
For the second time in three years, Tenby met Newport in the semi-final on Sunday morning. Sadly, the team who all fought extremely well against more experienced opposition, this time just lost 3 and 2.
The team was Bethan Morris, Emma Guerriero, Georgia Thomas, Denise Edwards, Sophie Lovatt and Heather Morgan and throughout the three days could not have done more to win the trophy for the first time since 1972 and we congratulate them all.
The caddies played vital roles in the matches as the team would all agree and even the supporters contributed - often nearly frozen and needing clubhouse sustenance regularly.
We look forward with every confidence to the next year finds which will be played at Whitchurch for the first time.
Away from the Team Championships, competitions have continued at home, and at the end of May, Amber Thomas did well in a stableford competition scoring 40 points with Ruth Goldwait second on 38 and Anna Hubbard third on 35.
The weekend GUW Medal was won by Maura Rimell on nett 75, with Georgina Ormond second on 83.
The Yorkshire Cup should have been played the following week but bad weather caused its postponement. Ah well, such is 2013!
The GUW Medal and Jones Parry Cup were played, together with Rita Collins scoring a fine nett 72 and Denise Edwards on nett 75. Denise also won the Jones Parry gross score cup. The nine-hole stableford was won by Jo Walsh Morgan on 13 on the back 9 from Nesta Hart.
Because she was involved in the Team Championships, she was unable to captain the PING team against Milford Haven at Newport Links, but we were all delighted the team won 3-1.
Over the years, Tenby Junior Girls have represented Wales in various events and we are delighted Bethan Morris, who led the team at Cardigan, will be playing for Wales under 16 team in Hamburg later in the year and is currently a reserve for the Great Britain team in Paris. Well done, Bethan.
