A couple of weeks ago four of the SPGC senior players, Mike Williams and Brian Williams and Brian Phillips and Phil Adams, travelled to Morriston GC (Swansea) to participate in the finals day of the annual SWSC Claret Jug competition.
Both pairs had qualified earlier in the season at a qualifying competition, which involved pairs of golfers from 63 clubs from across South Wales. The two SPGC pairs were amongst a field of 24 pairs, all challenging in good conditions over the tough Morriston parkland course.
Both teams performed well in this four-ball, better-ball, stableford competition. Eventually, after a titanic struggle and some excellent individual play, brothers Mike and Brian recorded 35 points, but Brian Phillips and Phil Adams amassed an exceptional score of 46 pts, to take the title for SPGC, from their nearest rivals, who had scored a very creditable 42 points.
The winning pair were presented with the cut-glass Claret Jug and the winners SWSC polo-shirts on the day. However, they will be attending a formal SWSC presentation evening in September, when they will formally be announced as the competition winners in front of a large audience of their peers.
The captain of the men’s seniors section, Mike Bradney, announced this tremendous success and congratulated the two winners, along with all senior members, at their most recent meeting.
