Last season New Hedges/Saundersfoot United introduced an over 60s side to the club with a friendly fixture against the Wales over 65s international side in Saundersfoot.

It was a great success, resulting in an invite to join the National league next season.

The League has completed for this season, leaving only their cup competition to complete this season. The Cup consists of home and away fixtures running from April, culminating in a Grand Final between the top two sides.

A Pembrokeshire Veterans over 60s side have been invited to take a place in the knockout competition, and it is hoped that this will allow the Club to assemble a squad large enough to join the League next season.

“At present we have the nucleolus of a team able to compete with the National side (after a decent 1-3 defeat) but are in need of a larger squad of players to cover injuries and unavailability,” said Mark Gray of NHS United.

“Confirmed sides in the cup are - Barry Town, Swansea, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontyclun F.C.

“Home match venues will be decided (depending on player response). Astro and grass pitches will both be considered.

“The team manager will be Steve Branch, he has represented the Veterans International side for many seasons and brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm from his pro football days with Brighton and Burnley.

“There will, of course, be opportunities to achieve selection for the National side (three of us were selected pre Covid).”

If any ex-players with a decent level of fitness (it is 11 a side and full contact – just slower!) are interested in getting the boots back on, please contact either Steve Branch ([email protected]) or Mark Gray ([email protected])
