County councillors in the locality have provided input to Pembrokeshire County Council after the local authority asked for feedback before conducting a review of one of the area’s largest sporting events.

PCC set up a review of how the Long Course Weekend event operated and as part of that a number of Councillors met with event organisers Activity Wales to discuss issues relating to their areas.

The event, which comprises of a swim, cycle ride and marathon over the course of three days, will take place in 2023 from June 30 to July 2.

‘Road Traffic Orders’ have been introduced for the sporting triathlon, held in Tenby and its surrounding area, on the past couple of occasions, with the race organisers Activity Wales working with the local authority.

The organisers stated that with 2022’s Wales Sportive cycle ride, seeing expanded road closures, restrictions and diversions in place, it made the event the most ‘comprehensive closed road ride in Wales’.

However, the road closures set out, meant that there was no access from New Hedges into Tenby from 9 am to 4.30 pm, with access during this time via Devonshire Drive and coming into the seaside town on the Marsh Road.

In Tenby, county councillor for the south ward Cllr Sam Skyrme-Blackhall met with organisers of the LCW to discuss changes to the event, after she had met with local businesses to discuss their concerns.

“As a result, the cycle ride will start and finish in the Salterns and the finish line of the run will be on the Esplanade. This will avoid the two days of disruption in Tudor Square,” said Cllr Skyrme-Blackhall.

“I am pleased that we have been able to agree these changes and hope that this be of benefit to local people, businesses and the event itself.”

County councillor for St Mary Out Liberty (New Hedges) and St Florence, Cllr Rhys Jordan, was one of those that called for the review after he received a ‘large amount of complaints’ from ward members.

This week, Cllr Jordan stated: “I’m delighted a robust review was able to take place to ensure LCW work in harmony with our communities across South Pembrokeshire.”
