To mark National Moving Day, on Monday, August 19, leading developer Lovell Homes is sharing its top tips on how new homebuyers can experience a less stressful move.

Suzie Hewitt, regional sales director at Lovell Homes, said: “There’s no denying that moving home is stressful, but it’s also one of the most exciting milestones a person can achieve. We want our new residents to focus on that excitement as much as possible, which is why we’ve put together a list of the top five things homebuyers can do to make their move as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

“At Lovell Homes we are here to assist our buyers every step of the way and hope that our top tips are a great help.”

Plan ahead   The earlier you start planning your move, the less stressed you’ll be on the day. Start by putting together a checklist of everything that needs to be done and creating a schedule, to help you stay on track and avoid getting too overwhelmed. Hiring a moving company will also help take a weight off your shoulders. Take the time to thoroughly research and select a company with a good reputation, and then book them in plenty of time.

Declutter before you move  To save the hassle of packing up items that you may no longer want or need, declutter your home before you start packing. Donating, selling or throwing way unwanted belongings will make your move much more manageable and save time when unpacking in your new home. It also doubles up as the perfect opportunity to start fresh and keep your new home clutter-free.

Pack one room at a time  Make the packing process much less daunting by going one room at a time. Start with the room you use the least and work your way up to the most used or trickiest room, which is most commonly the kitchen.     When packing, utilise colour-coded labels to clearly indicate which boxes need to go where and what items they contain. Being specific with your labels will make unpacking hassle-free and help you to find the most needed items, such as cutlery and plates, first.

Keep essential items to one side   It’s a good idea to pack a separate box or bag of your essential items, to make sure these don’t get lost amongst all the other boxes on moving day. Collate the things you’ll need for the first days and nights in your new home, such as toiletries, spare clothes and pyjamas, phone chargers, bin liners, and any food and drinks you’ll need to keep your energy levels up.

Ask friends and family for help  Decluttering, packing and unpacking is a huge undertaking and not something you need to go through alone. Enlist the help of family, friends and neighbours to help you sort through items, fill and label boxes, and put things away in your new home. Not only will this reduce stress, but it can also make the experience much more enjoyable.
