Instances of after dark anti-social behaviour regularly occurring around some of Tenby’s beauty spots and beaches, has seen Dyfed-Powys Police vow to ‘step-up high visibility’ patrols in the area to ‘robustly’ tackle concerns - but how many times have we heard the same old phrases and promises churned out for communities before we start to realise that such soundbites are a cop out?

This weekend, acts of vandalism up at Tenby cemetery with benches damaged and floral tributes deliberately and callously ruined were discovered. This on the back of several examples this month of large groups of teenagers gathering early evening and after dark, highlighting concerns relating to underage drinking and drug-taking, along with other such unruly acts of criminal damage and littering.

Some such louts have even been seen to be ripping out trees specifically to set them alight, dangerously starting bonfires around the grass cliff areas alongside beaches.

A walkaround Tenby of an evening for a resident or visitor will clearly show the types of mindless idiots that are hanging around with nothing better to do then carry out such acts of criminality, and whilst we know that police officers can’t be everywhere at once, or on the scene of a crime as it occurs - is it really too much to expect to see a few ‘bobbys on the beat’ around the area, especially with such a huge influx of people visiting the locality now the holiday season has started?

Incidents of violence that erupted in Pembroke Dock in broad daylight over the weekend, with footage emerging on social media of a man in a hoodie sinisterly wielding a weapon in the street said to be a machete or Samurai sword, and of people fighting themselves to the floor, have left many in the community fearing for their safety.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon (June 15) whilst what has been described as ‘awful scenes’ of chaos continued to escalate.

Many members of the public who have stated that such situations are becoming a worryingly regular occurrence, and are seemingly related to drugs, with many long calling for police to take robust action to tackle the situation.

“About time the police had a massive crack down on drug dealers in Pembrokeshire - it’s getting ridiculous now!” posted one concerned member of the public on Facebook.

Recently, a Pembroke councillor rightly criticised local police responses to incidents that are on the rise, highlighting how policing had become ‘woefully inadequate’ in recent times around his constituency.

“It’s unusual to see police patrols after 10pm because most of the police patrols are carried out by PCSOs, who normally finish at 10pm!” remarked the county councillor, who went onto meet with Dyfed-Powys Police’s Chief Constable to voice his concerns, and look to suggest a more effective way of ‘policing our community’ – to make it a safer and more pleasant place to live.

We’ve since been told that the local policing teams will be utilising all resources at their disposal, including - dispersal orders, community protection warnings and notices - ‘striving to tackle problematic persons’.

You don’t have to be Columbo to recognise the repeat re-offenders and troublemakers - but “Just one more thing” - perhaps the local ‘boys in blue’ are still concentrating their efforts on trying to track down the Woolworths burglar from 2005??
