Proposals to bring a ‘Big Wheel’ to Tenby certainly stoked up some feeling amongst those residing in the seaside town - and not in a good way - but the conversation and comments online did lead to a fresh debate on what is more importantly needed for the town - and what would benefit those living and working in the locality.
Town councillors said the idea of introducing such an attraction would have to be considered carefully as there were concerns it could turn the historic town into a ‘Disneyland’. Others online concurred, stating that Tenby doesn’t need such a gimmick to attract tourists, suggesting that if you want Blackpool...then go to Blackpool!
Putting tourism aside, whilst no-one may want Pembrokeshire’s most picturesque town turned into some kind of tacky resort, is it too much to ask for a little more TLC from the Local Authority to be shown to the county’s ‘Jewel in the Crown’ - and some basic investment in infrastructure for local people and families.
‘Does anyone care?’ about the neglect of the town asked one councillor ahead of last summer; with another pointing to ‘simple things, that bring the town down’ in highlighting parts that looked ‘pretty grim’ - and almost a year on, a walk around the harbour, Castle Hill and other prominent parts of the town will show that very little has been done to improve the landscape.
Voluntary groups can only do so much to improve the look of a locality, and with such a hike in Council Tax this month, such work shouldn’t fall onto a band of volunteers to carry out.
There are still random notices hanging off lamp posts put up by PCC post Covid three years ago as the country came out of lockdown!
Perhaps its time some of the County Council’s highly paid officers come out of their ‘work from home’ lockdown mode and have a little walkabout themselves to see how tired Tenby is looking. They could even bring with them a bar of soap for dirty Prince Albert...who still needs a good scrub!
