The Mayor of Whitland hopes that open days which have been held at the Town Hall this week will highlight the versatility of the facility.
Twenty-two-year-old Clr. Craig Wilson, who is thought to be the youngest Mayor in the UK, has been at Whitland Town Hall all week promoting the venue along with members of the Town Hall committee, which includes his mother, Clr. Mrs. Carol Wilson, and younger sister, Clair, who is Mayoress of the town.
We are in a prime spot here in Whitland only 15 miles away or so from places such as Carmarthen, Crymych and Tenby, so were trying to promote the Town Hall as a facility for all kinds of functions and also looking to show organisations from further afield who may want to hold an event here, whats on offer, explained the Mayor.
The history of the hall dates back to 1904 when it was built, while in 1951 the top floor of the building became a cinema, The Colosseum, and the rest of the premises a staff and social club.
In 1973, the hall, which is situated in King Edward Street, was conveyed to the trustees of the Town Hall and in 1992 an extension and extensive renovation was carried out, leading to the hall that is seen today.
The main hall now boasts some 172.5 square metres of space, suitable for conference, receptions, exhibitions, seminars and parties, with tables available to seat 150 guests and chairs to seat 200.
A recent refurbishment has also seen new windows fitted, along with a new bar.
The Town Council meets in the Mayors Parlour section of the building, while the Whitland and District Twinning Association also regularly hold meetings at the venue.
The idea of the open days is to show the range of functions and events that can be held and hosted here at the Town Hall, from concerts to line dancing, wedding receptions to christenings, and also to show the range of facilities that are available for clubs and classes thinking about meeting here, said Clr. Mrs. Wilson, who is treasurer of the Town Hall committee.
The final day of the week-long open days is today (Friday).
